WHAT TO SEE AND VISIT IN FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
A land of many charms, blessed by Mother Nature with touches of undeniable beauty and rich in traditions, with a central location in the country, Figueira da Foz, with its 14 parishes, offers a generous range of essential places and events that visitors should not miss, whether they are on holiday, on a weekend getaway or even just passing through.
So, here is MeetFigueira’s selection of the most important and emblematic spaces and events in the municipality: the essentials on what to see and visit in Figueira da Foz.
FIGUEIRA DA FOZ ESSENTIALS
SERRA DA BOA VIAGEM
In the imposing Serra da Boa Viagem, in addition to the rich biodiversity and the peace and quiet that reigns in the forest trails, you can enjoy stunning landscapes as far as the eye can see, to the north and south, or to the vast blue ocean to the west. At the top and on the slopes, we find the leafy Boa Viagem Forest Park, a protected area of around 400 hectares, full of wonderful corners and trails, ideal for walking, cycling, contemplation or refreshing picnics.

The magnificent Miradouro da Bandeira, in addition to being a pleasant place to rest and have a picnic, offers a unique panoramic view over the northern slope of the mountain range, the Atlantic Ocean and the vast Gandara plain, with views extending as far as Praia de Mira, or further north on clear days.

At the tip of the mountain range that plunges into the Atlantic, between the beaches of Quiaios and Figueira da Foz, we find Cabo Mondego, a classified and protected natural monument since 2007, with enormous geological and palaeontological value, with its important Jurassic references. In addition to the Cabo Mondego Lighthouse, several wild beaches and steep areas, where sport fishermen can venture, it also has a significant mining heritage, as for centuries underground coal mines and open-cast hydraulic lime mining operated here, which destroyed much of the original landscape of the Cape. We recommend, of course, taking the road that runs along the coast of the Cape, passing by the Lighthouse and the brand new panoramic road that connects to Murtinheira, perhaps the most beautiful route in the municipality, especially in the late afternoon (not recommended for pedestrians).
CASINO FIGUEIRA
The Figueira da Foz Casino is one of the most iconic gaming and entertainment venues in Portugal. With a privileged location in the heart of the charming Bairro Novo, this casino offers a wide variety of gambling games, such as roulette, blackjack and poker, as well as a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere.

It is also known for its constant programme of shows, ranging from live music concerts to themed parties, resident shows and corporate events. With an experienced and dedicated team, this venue is ideal for a lively evening or a fun night out with friends. It also has a gourmet restaurant, the excellent Páteo do Casino, and a bar, where you can enjoy a wide variety of dishes and drinks, an innovative tribute to traditional Portuguese cuisine, in an elegant and comfortable environment.
ABADIAS PARK
The lungs of the city. This vast green space that “tears” the urban area in two is crossed by a stream that originates in the Serra da Boa Viagem and keeps this extensive valley cooler and more humid in the warmer months. Equipped with leisure and sports facilities – a power station at the northern end, basketball and football pitches, a running and cycling trail and fitness equipment – “the Abadias”, as the locals call it, is an excellent space for families, also providing a good playground and plenty of shade for urban picnics or simply walking. Central location, surrounded by many shops and services.

Here we also find some of the most important cultural spaces in the municipality, such as the Municipal Library and the Santos Rocha Museum or the Arts and Entertainment Center, both award-winning pieces of architecture with a dynamic schedule of events for all ages.
Although it is mainly a large lawn, the park has a remarkable collection of native Portuguese trees, some of them monumental, such as the Alder, the Black Poplar, the White Poplar, the Willow, the Lime, the Holm Oak, the Oak, the Ash, the Maple, the Tipuana, the Pyrenean Oak, the Chestnut and the Stone Pine. More recently, it has been given some areas designated as “pollinator gardens”, protected from the usual felling, where more luxuriant wild vegetation grows.

ENGENHEIRO SILVA MUNICIPAL MARKET
The Engenheiro Silva Municipal Market is a historic place of great importance to the local community. Its main attraction is fish, but it also offers a wide variety of fresh produce, flowers, clothing, wines, cheeses, butchery and much more. It also serves as a meeting point for the community, as it also has a Citizen’s Shop counter, the Figueira da Foz Senior University and a co-working space.

On weekends, mornings are busier and more vibrant, with stalls bursting with colours, smells and fresh flavours. But more than just the produce, the market is about people: local traders who have worked here, some for generations, are always willing to share their stories and the characteristics of their products with vivacity, offering a true immersion in the local culture and making this an absolutely essential space on the list of places to visit in Figueira da Foz, especially if you enjoy genuine experiences.
FIGUEIRA DA FOZ ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT CENTER (CAE)
The Figueira da Foz Arts and Entertainment Centre is one of the most emblematic cultural facilities in the central region. Designed by architect Luís Marçal Grilo and opened in 2002, this multifaceted space aims to promote diversity and artistic excellence, hosting theatre, music, dance, cinema and exhibitions. With bold and functional architecture and a large, welcoming atrium/garden with sculptures and open to the public, the CAE also has a large performance hall for 800 people, an auditorium with independent cinema every Friday, several exhibition and rehearsal rooms, as well as a bookstore, Espaço Bruaá, specialising in children’s and young people’s literature, as well as a high-quality restaurant with views over the Parque das Abadias, Olaias, awarded the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand distinction again in 2025.

It also has an arts school and a vast and ongoing programme of cultural activities and exhibitions for all audiences and ages, contributing to the cultural enrichment of the region. At the back, there is a beautiful and sheltered open-air amphitheatre, a refuge surrounded by imposing trees that invite you to spend more peaceful moments, close to but far from the hustle and bustle of the city, which many people simply enjoy reading.

SANTOS ROCHA MUNICIPAL MUSEUM
Located in the Parque das Abadias, in an iconic building designed by Isaías Cardoso, the Figueira da Foz Municipal Museum has several varied and extremely interesting collections, which include everything from Renaissance sculptures to Indo-Portuguese furniture, ancient weapons and weapons from the First World War, and an ethnographic collection of African, Brazilian and Oriental origin. It also has a permanent exhibition of archaeology, mainly prehistoric, which mainly portrays the dedicated work of one of the fathers of national archaeology, António dos Santos Rocha, its founder and first director. The Museum is an excellent option for those looking to learn a little more about the history and culture of the region, and beyond…

IGREJA DE SÃO JULIÃO
The headquarters of the parish of Figueira da Foz, it is one of the main Catholic churches in the municipality and has a history that goes back almost a thousand years, going back to the roots of the city’s history. The original church of Figueira da Foz, built or rebuilt by Abbot Pedro in 1080, was at the origin of the town, then called S. Julião da Foz do Mondego. With nothing left of the original foundation, the current church, classified as a property of public interest since 2012, is an 18th century reconstruction with several subsequent interventions. Inside, with a single nave, there is a side chapel with a 16th century stone altarpiece from the Seiça Monastery, as well as paintings from 1784 and sculptures from the 16th and 18th centuries. In an excellent state of conservation, it continues to carry out full liturgical activities and is certainly worth a long visit.

CASA DO PAÇO
One of the most striking buildings on the city’s riverfront, Casa do Paço is also one of those with the richest history, having had several “lives” and functions since it was built in the 17th century. It began as the summer residence of the Bishop-Count of Coimbra, D. João de Melo, and remained the property of the Melo family until the beginning of the 19th century. Since then, it has had several owners and uses, including as the first Municipal Museum, as a theatre and as the protocol visiting room of Figueira da Foz.

But what makes it truly distinctive is its collection of early 18th century Dutch tiles, with around 6,700 Delft tiles, each one an individual work, unique in the world and definitely worth a close visit, especially for lovers of this beautiful decorative art. The tiles and the visiting rooms are on the so-called “main floor”, with an entrance through a beautiful garden on the side opposite the river. It now also houses the Figueira da Foz Commercial and Industrial Association in the side wings, and shops and services on the ground floor.
SANTA CATARINA FORT
A true icon of the Figueira da Foz coastal landscape, this imposing coastal fortification protected the bar and bay of Figueira da Foz for centuries, both as a lighthouse (between 1988 and 1991) and in its military role, having played a particularly prominent role in the Napoleonic Invasions, as attested by the inscription that can be read at the entrance.
The Fort was built between the 16th and 17th centuries and has seen several battles, but it has long been a privileged place of peace and leisure, and in recent years it has benefited from significant rehabilitation and requalification actions, especially the surrounding area, with pleasant squares and water mirrors.

Inside, in addition to the small Chapel of Santa Catarina, there is a bar-restaurant, famous for its craft beer and delicious burgers, which guarantees entertainment and full public enjoyment of this classified heritage site of Figueira da Foz, with so many stories to tell. At the top, with a terrace, you can enjoy magnificent views and wonderful sunsets.
BUARCOS FORTRESS
A coastal fortification that protected the town of Buarcos for centuries, which until the 19th century was the main population centre of this coastal area. Composed of 3 bastions, joined by 2 sections of wall, the Fortress has heritage protection status and offers an excellent visiting experience, with panoramic views over the city and the ocean. Despite having been significantly altered and reduced over the years, due to its loss of military use, what remains of the walls are reasonably well preserved and are also well worth a visit and a walk along the battlements overlooking the sea.

Having identified the most popular and most visited places in Figueira da Foz, we could not fail to mention a second set, intended for spaces that, due to their aesthetic richness or the experience they offer, also deserve the honour of being included on the list of “what to see and visit in Figueira da Foz”.
EXPLORE OTHER TREASURES OF FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
TOWN HALL BUILDING
Although it is a workspace – most of the services of the Figueira da Foz City Council are located there – the Town Hall Building, completed in 1897, is a property of municipal interest and an elegant, beautiful and functional space. Inside, there are several notable features, such as the exquisite main hall with an ornamented ceiling by Ernesto Korrodi, an imposing atrium, a bust sculpted by Júlio Vaz Júnior in homage to Santos Rocha, a bas-relief representing the mining and glass industry sculpted by Leopoldo de Almeida, and an oil painting by João Reis.

MUNICIPAL GARDEN
Over 130 years old, this is the most central and popular garden in the city, with a bandstand for shows, grassy areas, leafy trees, kiosks, an excellent children’s playground and a café with a terrace. There is no shortage of shade in this elegant green corner of Figueira da Foz for all ages. Located next to the Municipal Market, the Courthouse and the central post office, as well as numerous bars and restaurants, it serves as a link between the old part of the city and the Bairro Novo.

FISHERMEN’S HOUSE
The Casa dos Pescadores da Costa de Lavos is a local association that provides guided tours about the life of people linked to the sea. When the weather permits, there is a visit to the xávega art, to see the entire process, which is still partly artisanal, from taking the nets out to sea to separating the fish when they return to the beach. The old tavern, with a valuable historical heritage donated by this old fishing community, is the ideal place to hear stories about the sea and its objects.

LARANJEIRA SANTOS CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER (NACLS)
The new space that houses the Tourist Office, in the iconic and restored “Castelo Engenheiro Silva” building, in the heart of Esplanada Silva Guimarães, also includes the Laranjeira Santos Contemporary Art Centre, filled with sculptures by this important artist, and a room for temporary exhibitions. It certainly requires a more careful visit.

SALT MUSEUM CENTER
Opened in 2007, the Salt Museum Centre in Figueira da Foz, in the Lavos Warehouses, celebrates the centuries-old relationship between the local population and the salt mines of the Mondego River estuary. This educational and informative space, a true eco-museum, has the mission of preserving and promoting the tradition of artisanal salt and the ecosystem of the salt mines, as well as promoting the sustainable development of the entire area, as a tourist hub in the south of the municipality.
The entire area surrounding the museum complex offers unique experiences and the exhibition area explores five themes: the definition of salt, salt in nature, the history of salt in Portugal, salt technology in Figueira da Foz and nature conservation. It is also the starting and finishing point of the Figueira da Foz Salt Pans Route, a low-difficulty walk through an area rich in natural diversity, ideal for bird watching and contemplation.
The Center benefited from extensive rehabilitation works during 2024, and is now part of the national Quintas Ciência Viva network.

MUSEUM CENTER OF THE SEA
The Sea Museum was inaugurated in May 2003 and aims to recover and disseminate the historical memories and fishing practices of the coastal communities of Figueira da Foz. The collection includes documentary records, photographs, equipment and oral testimonies that reveal the traditions and identity of the communities. Since July 2013, the ground floor has housed the Buarcos Branch of the Pedro Fernandes Tomás Municipal Public Library, specializing in children’s literature and maritime history. Since 2015, the Núcleo Museológico do Mar has had the “Querer Saber” space, which presents the personal collection of Francisco Lacerda and Manuela Andrade Pinto, dedicated to teaching. Free admission and recommended.

COLISEU FIGUEIRENSE
The Coliseu, built in 1895, with a capacity for 6,000 people, is a landmark of the bullfighting tradition in Figueira da Foz and one of the most beautiful squares in the country. In addition to bullfighting shows, it hosts several cultural, sporting and festive events, including the famous “garraiada” of the Queima das Fitas de Coimbra. Take a guided tour of the Coliseu Figueira da Foz with Pó de Saber: email podesaber.patrimonio@gmail.com or call 964 460 709.

SOTTO MAYOR PALACE
This luxurious French-style palace from the early 20th century is considered the most imposing and elegant residential building in the city. Surrounded by large, well-kept gardens, its interior decoration was designed by the best artists of the time, and features an extraordinary collection of furniture, paintings and decorative arts.
The building is now owned by the company that owns Casino Figueira and opens its doors to guided tours (organised by Pó de Saber) of great historical and architectural interest:
- Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Tickets cost 5 Euros per person, and are free for children up to 12 years old (inclusive). Reservations must be made in advance by email at podesaber.patrimonio@gmail.com or by calling 964 460 709.

MORRACEIRA ISLAND
Morraceira Island is one of the most beautiful treasures of Figueira da Foz. It offers a unique experience for those who want to learn about artisanal salt production, the flora and fauna of the Mondego estuary, as well as aquaculture. The company TimeOff, for example, organizes guided tours of the island, which are worth every kilometer traveled. With narrow but safe trails, visitors can appreciate the ecological beauty of the island, while learning about salt production and other local products, such as seaweed, salicornia and oysters.

The island is also famous for its flamingos and herons, which delight visitors with their colorful elegance, often in large flocks that provide fantastic photo opportunities.

IMAGE STATION
In 1924, the building was acquired by the Municipality of Figueira da Foz, and extension and remodelling works were carried out to house the then-named Fire Station. Between 1928 and 1953, this building also housed the Municipal Library on the 1st floor, and the Municipal Fire Department remained there until 2015. It has since reopened, after renovation works, with new features: a shared space for images, with an area dedicated to coworking, focused on graphic arts, photography, cinema and the Municipal Photo Archive, as well as a new exhibition space.

SANTA OLAIA HILL (OR EULÁLIA)
Also known as the Fortified Village of Santa Eulália, or simply Santa Eulália Hill (or Olaia), this site in the rural parish of Ferreira a Nova is of enormous archaeological and scenic importance, being a “showcase” of the different peoples who inhabited the region of Foz do Mondego for millennia, including the Phoenicians, who established a trading post here. In addition to a beautiful, more recent chapel (16th century), which still hosts an annual pilgrimage, this site shows signs of intense occupation from the Neolithic period, through the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Romans and the medieval period. There was an important castle on this hill at the time of the founding of the nation and the reconquest, before the magnificent castle of Montemor-o-Velho, nearby.

The Phoenician presence is also notable, as it is one of the main Phoenician trading posts studied and investigated in Portugal. This work began with the famous archaeologist from Figueira, António dos Santos Rocha, a pioneer of national archaeology in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The objects resulting from these and other subsequent excavations are in the Municipal Museum. However, a visit to this hill is also worthwhile as a viewpoint overlooking the beautiful agricultural landscape of the Baixo Mondego. It is an excellent excuse for a bike ride through the rice fields, with a refreshing stop at the small river beach of Ereira, nearby.
FIGUEIRA DA FOZ PILLORY
A beautiful municipal and jurisdictional landmark of the city of Figueira da Foz, made of limestone and erected in 1782 on a base of five square steps, on which rises a rounded pedestal and above this an elegant twisted column, crowned by a capital on which the national coat of arms is carved, on one of its sides, amidst shell ornaments. It has been a National Monument since 1910.

SANTA MARIA DE SEIÇA MONASTERY
The current “jewel in the crown” of the historical and architectural heritage of the interior of the municipality, the Monastery of Seiça, in the parish of Paião, is an impressive example of a medieval Portuguese monastic complex, in the context of the monasteries of the religious order of Cistercian, which were fundamental in the foundation of the nationality and in the exploration of the Portuguese territory after the Reconquista – the monastery is mentioned in documents from 1162.
Like Alcobaça or Lorvão, the Monastery of Seiça is the guardian of this Cistercian memory, having been completely restored in 2023 by the Municipality, once again revealing part of its splendour. Surrounded by agricultural fields and forest, this grand National Monument is one of the obligatory stopping points on the great Eurovelo route of the Atlantic Coast. The Monastery has undergone extensive renovation work and was recently inaugurated. Visits from Wednesday to Sunday, from 2 pm to 6 pm. Check the entrance fees here: https://www.cm-figfoz.pt/pages/1053

The Harvest Festival is held annually on the first Sunday after 13 May, in gratitude for the fertility of the land. A large annual fair/festival is also held on 15 August in honour of Santa Maria de Seiça. Nestled in the lush green rural and forested landscape of the Mondego River valley, the chapel is also on the running and cycling routes along the southern bank of the municipality, including the Eurovelo.
PAÇO OF TAVAREDE
One of the most striking buildings in the parish of Tavarede, the Paço (or Solar) de Tavarede is a small palace with a very modern appearance but still showing its old design, dating back to the 16th century. It was built in the 16th century by António Fernandes de Quadros, lord of Buarcos and Vila Verde, who established the estate of Tavarede at that time and took up residence there. Its main tower (built late, in the 19th century) is interesting, probably inspired by the Torre de Belém, with beautiful Manueline details. It was the home of a local aristocratic family, and is now a public building serving the Figueira da Foz Municipal Council.

SILVA GUIMARÃES PROMENADE
The Silva Guimarães Promenade is known as the “panoramic balcony” of Figueira da Foz. This charming seafront space offers stunning views of the city, the ocean, the mountains and the mouth of the Mondego River. Ideal for relaxing, socializing, enjoying a drink or an ice cream, the terrace provides a unique and memorable experience for visitors and locals, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of the region with a clear and unobstructed view. We have a very complete guide to this iconic place in Figueira da Foz.

VELA LAGOON
The largest of the Quiaios and Bom-Sucesso Lagoons and one of the largest natural lagoons in the Iberian Peninsula. It is not recommended for swimming, but it is an unrivalled spot for nature tourism, with enormous biodiversity, a refreshing forest setting and picnic facilities, walkways and birdwatching.

Vela Lagoon is also a hot spot for sport fishing, one of the quietest places in the county to cast your hook, and is close to the great Eurovelo Atlantic route, making it a refreshing stop for cyclists and hikers.
CABO MONDEGO LIGHTHOUSE
The Cabo Mondego Lighthouse, located on the coastal edge of the Serra da Boa Viagem, is a fantastic landmark in the landscape and a historical monument, built in 1917, when it replaced the old lighthouse, which a little further south had supported navigation since 1858.

With a 15-metre central tower and two longitudinal sections, the lighthouse has been modernised and is now fully automated, very different from the original design, which was powered by olive oil. Imposing and with interesting architecture, it also benefits from magnificent views over the entire Cape Mondego.

CLOCK TOWER
The iconic Clock Tower, a building of Municipal Interest, was built in the 1940s with the aim of breaking up the horizontality of the beach and enriching the newly built Bairro Novo de Santa Catarina with useful and striking facilities. It is one of the most iconic monuments in Figueira da Foz and can be seen from many different spots along the coast. The 23-metre-high tower was fitted with a sundial in 1949 and a mechanical clock in the 1970s.

TRINDADE THEATER
The beautiful Trindade Theater in Buarcos was built in 1910 by Fernando Augusto Soares in honor of his wife, Trindade Ritto Josepha Penha. The theater replaced the old Celeiro Theater and was inaugurated two months after the establishment of the Republic in Portugal. It has an auditorium with a capacity for 234 seats and a neo-Manueline façade with decorative elements representing the Arts.

The interior is a scaled-down replica of Lisbon’s Teatro Trindade, with carved medallions and a crystal chandelier. The building has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest since 2012 and currently serves as the headquarters of the century-old União Futebol de Buarcos football club, which also hosts cultural activities and a bar open to the public.
BAIRRO NOVO
The “heart” of the city, this is where everything happens. Just a stone’s throw from the beach, Bairro Novo de Santa Catarina, or Saint Catherine New District, was built in the last century to create a new beach and shopping hub in Figueira da Foz, and is an excellent architectural showcase of Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

This is where the nightlife in Figueira da Foz is at its best, with plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants, including the lively Casino Figueira, the Esplanada Silva Guimarães and the “Picadeiro” area. Also keep an eye on the walls, as there are excellent works of public art and graffiti scattered throughout the neighbourhood, inherited from the Fusing Festival, which left significant marks on the cultural life of Figueira da Foz in the last decade.
MAIORCA
One of the most picturesque towns in the Baixo Mondego region, Maiorca is not just a stop on the Rice Route or a mere stopover on the way to Figueira. It is worth a long stop for its historic centre and the surrounding landscape. It has a charm all its own and, in addition to its natural beauty, it boasts an unusual wealth of cultural heritage, particularly in terms of architecture, including impressive mansions such as the Conselheiro Branco Palace, the Paço de Maiorca, the Casa da Quinta/Paços da Baia and the beautiful church.

In addition to the many local folk traditions, the town hosts the FestiMaiorca (International Folklore Festival) every July, one of the most important ethnographic events in the region, and the Findagrim Mallorca Commercial, Industrial and Agricultural Fair in August, where you can enjoy local cuisine and crafts. The fortnightly Mallorca Fair takes place on the 17th and 28th of each month.
CARNIÇOSAS DOLMEN
This entire beautiful and fertile region around the estuary of the River Mondego, where Figueira da Foz was built, has been inhabited for thousands of years, and has been home to human communities since prehistoric times. And these successive occupations have left their mark, many of which can still be seen, whether in the excellent Santos Rocha Municipal Museum or on the ground, in important archaeological sites such as Santa Olaia or this unique Carniçosas Dolmen, a prehistoric monument in Brenha (Alhadas), which is definitely worth a visit, preferably on a bike ride to the interior of the municipality. According to the Municipality, it “is an integral part of a vast group of funerary monuments that dot the Alhadas, Brenha and Boa Viagem mountain ranges, defining a dolmen ridge line” – unfortunately, not all of them are in a good state of conservation or open to visitors. It has been a National Monument since 1910.

WHAT TO DO IN FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
So don’t think that Figueira da Foz – once known as the Queen of Portugal’s Beaches – is all about the sea and beaches. As we’ve already begun to see, the reality is quite different. There’s no shortage of experiences and entertainment options in the city and the surrounding area, from the simplest and most invigorating walks through nature to the most radical adventures in the waves or the most exquisite gastronomic experience. It’s hard to choose. Take a look:
GO UP TO THE CABO MONDEGO VIEWPOINT
The Cabo Mondego Viewpoint, located on the western sea slope of the Serra da Boa Viagem, offers stunning views of the city, the sea and the entire southern coast. This spot is located a few hundred metres up the road from Praia do Teimoso. From this elevated point, on clear days, you can see the coast as far as Vieira de Leiria, with Buarcos Bay standing out. An unmissable place to enjoy the landscape and unique moments in contact with nature, with the scent of the sea air.

TASTE BRISAS DA FIGUEIRA
The “Brisas da Figueira” stand out as a worthy representative of the municipality’s sweets, originating from a convent recipe. Rediscovered by Pastelaria/Padaria Dionísio after years of being forgotten, this delicacy is made with shortcrust pastry made with butter, sugar, eggs and milk. The filling is made with egg yolks, sugar and almond flour. A very “robust” sweet, which you will certainly not forget.

And since we’re talking about local sweet creativity, don’t forget to stop by the Conchinha Doce bakery, near Abadias, to try the famous Santaninha, a Figueira version of mille-feuille. It’s so good you’ll want more.
CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN AND ENJOY THE VIEWS FROM THE BANDEIRA VIEWPOINT
The Miradouro da Bandeira (or flag viewpoint), located high on the northern slope of the Serra da Boa Viagem, offers a stunning panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, the town of Quiaios and the national forests that stretch to the north. With a wide and unobstructed view, this place, in addition to being romantic, invites reflection and admiration of the landscape, allowing visitors to capture incredible photographs and create unforgettable memories.

DISCOVER THE SERRA DA BOA VIAGEM WATERFALL
The Serra da Boa Viagem Waterfall, in Quiaios, is a hidden corner in Figueira da Foz, offering a green and invigorating natural setting. The trails to the small waterfall take visitors along paths surrounded by vegetation and provide a great experience of contact with nature, especially for those coming from the mountain side. Ideal for lovers of trekking and photography, the Serra da Boa Viagem Waterfall is a hidden treasure, waiting to be discovered. Normally without water in the summer.

TAKE THE ROUTE OF ART NOUVEAU
The Figueira da Foz Art Nouveau Route is an invitation to travel back in time, requiring you to look up and admire the façades above all. A stroll through the buildings that marked the beginning of the 20th century and that still display the beauty and elegance of Art Nouveau today, as well as the city’s architectural legacy. On this route, which mainly passes through the charming New District of Saint Catherine, you can discover the history and architecture of some of the city’s most emblematic buildings, such as the Figueira Casino, the Engenheiro Silva Castle (which now houses the Contemporary Art Center Laranjeira Santos) and the Ocean Casino.

Through the winding lines, the floral and maritime decorations, the beautiful tiles and the stained glass windows and other delightful touches of art nouveau or art deco, we can feel the atmosphere of an era marked by refinement and sophistication, especially inspired by the French Belle Époque era. A route that invites you to a relaxing and cultural stroll, full of discoveries and surprises at every corner.

A FUN MORNING (OR AFTERNOON) WITH THE CHILDREN AT PRAÇA DO FORTE
Situated on the right bank of the mouth of the Mondego River, protected from the north winds, Praça do Forte – or Praça Dr. João Ataíde – is a large, open and safe space, which, in addition to hosting events and concerts, allows young people to enjoy the various electric and pedal-powered mobility options that the holiday season and weekends offer.

It is also a great area for a gentle bike ride or to try out the various fitness equipment spread along the river, all the way to the small Praia do Forte, where you will find a beach bar that is an excellent spot for a sunset with your partner or family.

The square also has a popular terrace, Jet 7.5 Food&Drinks, which operates as a bar and restaurant, with live music, usually on weekends. In June, it is usually the main stage for the City Festivals, hosting the Parish Fair, a gastronomic event that brings together all the parishes in the municipality.
GET INVOLVED IN THE PLEASANT LIVELINESS OF THE VILLAGE OF BUARCOS
Especially on sunny weekends or throughout the high season, but with a very special charm in the colder months, this once the most important town in the municipality invites visitors to explore its beautiful and typical corners and squares, among the dense houses, or its wide Atlantic avenues. Walk along the walls of Buarcos and admire the wide views of the ocean bay, lose yourself in the colourful inner streets of the old fishing village, where you will find gems such as the Trindade Theatre, the Church of São Pedro or the Sea Museum, find healthy breaks in the many urban or beach terraces or have fun in the eclectic events of the Caras Direitas Theatre.

TAKE THE RICE FIELDS ROUTE
The Rice Fields Route is a 13.2 km circular route that highlights the agricultural and archaeological components, influenced by the presence of the Mondego River. The rice fields shape the landscape and cultural identity of the region, present in the gastronomy, folklore and ethnography. The route offers birdwatching in the wetlands but also religious heritage, beautiful chapels and churches and archaeological heritage, including the Classified Site of Montes de Santa Olaia and Ferrestelo, where we find the Castro de Santa Olaia, already highlighted here, with traces of prehistoric, Phoenician and medieval presence. Timeoff organizes guided tours on this route.

WALKING AND BIRDWATCHING AT PRANTO VALLEY
If you are looking for a route that combines authentic landscapes, agricultural tradition and biodiversity, the Pranto Valley is one of the best destinations for walking or cycling in the municipality of Figueira da Foz. With the parish of Alqueidão as a reference point, this agricultural valley extends through rice fields, streams and flooded fields that create a perfect habitat for wildlife, covering several parishes in Figueira da Foz and Soure. The Pranto River, a southern tributary of the Mondego in the estuary area, is the watercourse that shapes this unique landscape, essential for rice cultivation and for the preservation of local ecosystems. In addition to direct contact with agricultural practices, birdwatching is one of the highlights of the route, with the Pranto Valley being one of the best places in the Baixo Mondego to observe herons, spoonbills, black ibis and many other aquatic birds, as well as being a paradise for dragonfly lovers. Whether walking or cycling, this is a tour that allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the countryside and discover the villages and one of the richest and least explored landscapes in the region.

TAKE A WALK THROUGH THE ABADIAS PARK
The Abadias Park, the green heart of the city of Figueira da Foz, is ideal for healthy walks along its wide lawns, inviting you to spend some quiet time and enjoy some well-being or to do some exercise to keep fit. You can explore both areas, north and south, separated by Avenida Dr. Joaquim de Carvalho, as well as discover the back of the Arts and Entertainment Centre, a hidden and almost magical place, ideal for those looking for a more meditative experience.

TAKE THE URBAN ART ROUTE
In recent years, Urban Art has added some magic and irreverence to the city, bringing new color and life to the relationship between people and urban space, positioning Figueira da Foz as an important destination for this form of contemporary expression. Drawings, murals, paintings, installations or messages by well-known, creative and aesthetically unique artists enchant the city and invite visitors to stroll around.

HAVE A PICNIC AT ABADIAS
We’ve already mentioned it here, but the Parque das Abadias is also the perfect place for a family picnic. With a vast green area that stretches north from the Municipal Garden, there’s no shortage of spaces and shade to choose from, as well as leisure and sports facilities. Take advantage of the peaceful atmosphere and central location to enjoy a good meal in contact with nature in the heart of the city, in the best company.

WATCH THE SPLENDID SUNSET IN FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
Watching the sunset from any of the many coastal viewpoints that the municipality offers is one of the most remarkable spectacles that you can find in Figueira da Foz. The sun sets gently over the sea, creating a unique and unmissable scene of strong and inspiring colours.

TOUR THE CAE EXHIBITION ROOMS
Located in a privileged location in the city, the Figueira da Foz Arts and Entertainment Centre (CAE) has 4 temporary exhibition rooms (one of which is dedicated to local artists), where you can enjoy a variety of artistic expressions, from painting to sculpture, photography and other forms of expression. In the interior garden, you will immediately find the four saints that the sculptor Paulo Neves created from a notable tree in Figueira da Foz, the Freixo de Santo António, which had to be cut down to transform into a beautiful sculptural ensemble.

TRACK THE LEGACY OF ARCHITECT ISAÍAS CARDOSO
An architect from Figueira da Foz of national importance, winner of the city’s Gold Medal and graduated from the Porto School of Fine Arts in 1954, he left an unmistakable mark on the city’s urban landscape, through iconic works such as the Piscina-Praia, the Esplanada Silva Guimarães or the Figueira da Foz Municipal Museum and Library, which should be appreciated in all their splendor.

As a complement, it is also worth mentioning the Casa Isaías Cardoso and the Aparthotel Sotto Mayor, now called Hotel Malibu Foz. To learn more about this route, we recommend reading the book «An architect, a city: Isaías Cardoso in Figueira da Foz», launched by the Municipality in 2023 and written by architects Susana Lobo and Alexandre Miguel.
PLAY A GAME OF MINI GOLF NEAR THE FORT
No one can resist a good challenge! Testing your skills on a mini golf course combines fun, family and competition all in one place. This course is located in a pleasant area next to the Tennis Club, Forte de Santa Catarina, and is worth a visit for its variety of tracks and obstacles that promise to challenge both beginners and veterans of the sport.

GO TO THE MOVIES ON FRIDAY NIGHT AT CAE
Every Friday night, the Centro de Artes e Espectáculos (Arts and Entertainment Center) shows a film outside the mainstream circuit in the João César Monteiro Auditorium, aiming for a more independent approach and awakening new curiosities and sensibilities in the viewer, drawing attention to award-winning cinematography from various countries or classics from the history of the seventh art. Great cinema is shown here.

TAKE THE CABO MONDEGO PANORAMIC ROAD
The perfect road for an inspiring evening and an unforgettable sunset. Recently built (it only lacks a dedicated space for pedestrians and cyclists), this road connects the beaches of Buarcos to Quiaios, following the coastline through the magnificent scenery of Cabo Mondego, of great geological and historical importance. The locals called this old road, now modernized, the “Estrada do Enforca Cães” (Road of the Hanged Dogs), a name still used today and whose origin is somewhat shrouded in grizzly speculation…

In addition to the breathtaking scenery, where you can see landmarks such as the Cabo Mondego Lighthouse and impressive rock formations, this road also provides easy access to the beautiful Murtinheira Beach, north of the Serra, and to everything that the adjacent Quiaios Beach has to offer in terms of restaurants and leisure.
TAKE THE BEACH ECOROUTE
One of the most beautiful walking trails in Figueira da Foz, the urban seafront eco-path splits the beach in two and offers around two kilometres of gentle, flat walking, between the white sand and the beautiful dune vegetation that is preserved along this large stretch of beach. But we would say that the main attraction is in fact the landscape, offering an inspiring view of the sea, the mountains and the city. Easy access to sports facilities, water points and toilets. It starts in the north, next to the skate park and continues to Praia do Forte de Santa Catarina. There is a cycle path running parallel to it.

SURFING THE WAVES OF FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
Figueira da Foz is a true paradise for surfing and bodyboarding enthusiasts. With white sand beaches and good quality waters, it is the perfect place for those seeking exciting adventures and adrenaline. The highlights are Praia do Cabedelo, famous for its tubular waves, ideal for experienced surfers, but also the Buarcos wave, considered the longest right-hand wave in Europe, or Praia da Murtinheira, to the north, which also attracts more daring surfers.
In addition, the municipality has several surf clubs, such as iSurf Club, Surfing Figueira, Surf’Scoll, Buarcos Surf Academy or Dude Surf School, offering lessons for all ages and levels. The sea conditions for wave sports are excellent almost all year round, with powerful waves on stormy days.

DOING EXERCISE FACING THE SEA
There are several fitness stations and fitness equipment strategically placed throughout the city, so that physical exercise can become even more enjoyable (or should we say “less painful”?). We would like to highlight two places: the one on Av. D. João II in Buarcos and the Power Station at Praia do Relógio. And let’s add an additional one, which offers a river view, near Praia do Forte. Unmissable and unique!

DISCOVER OUR RELIGIOUS HERITAGE
Although Figueira da Foz does not have any impressive cathedrals or basilicas, it is home to a valuable religious heritage, full of churches and chapels that, in addition to their historical and architectural significance, maintain an active and vibrant religious cult. The Monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça, a National Monument, plays a central role, but the spotlight also falls on more modest temples, whose annual festivities reveal the richness of local traditions. MeetFigueira mapped this heritage, a survey that includes more than 50 sites distributed throughout the 14 parishes of the municipality, and is a contribution to the possible creation of a “Sacred Route” that values and promotes this legacy, making known not only the classified monuments, but also other spaces that bear witness to the identity and devotion of local communities.

WALK DOWN LIBERTY STREET
This is not just a street named after the 25 de Abril democratic revolution of 1974; it is perhaps the most beautiful street in the city. At the northern end of Rua da Liberdade (for the locals, Tree Street), the view reaches the Serra da Boa Viagem in the distance. At its southern end, the views offer the beaches of the south and the meeting of the Mondego River with the Atlantic. In between, we find an elegant street full of trees, which make strolling along this central artery of the city’s touristic Bairro Novo more refreshing.

TAKING CHILDREN TO PLAYGROUNDS
Figueira da Foz is full of outdoor playgrounds; all the parish councils have their own and there are also many in the city. We recommend the Abadias playground, which enjoys a privileged location in the middle of a green park, with plenty of shade and a natural surface that is very appealing to children.

Furthermore, the amusement equipment itself is original and very well designed, such as the super appealing slide! But the parks at Jardim Municipal (this one recently modernized with new, more fun and safer equipment) and the one at Praia de Buarcos, Parque Infantil Elizio Ferreira Lourenço, next to the sand, are also not to be missed.
ENJOY THE PEACEFUL MOODS OF THE MONDEGO RIVER
The Mondego is at its most turbulent on its way to its mouth. In winter, the floods no longer cause the same damage as before, but we can still see the raging waters. However, in its calmest moments, the largest Portuguese river brings with it an atmosphere of serenity, conducive to contemplation. There are many places where you can witness and feel the peace of the Mondego’s waters, from Praça Europa, to the terrace of the Skiqper bar, and from Praça do Forte, just before it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Looking out from Cabedelo, which is now easily accessible by a small ferry, we have a magnificent panoramic view of the river, the city and the mountains. Further upstream, we highly recommend a visit to the Centro Náutico do Ginásio Figueirense, in Fontela, with a magnificent terrace and viewpoint over the river, the Edgar Cardoso Bridge and the Ilha da Morraceira on the other bank.
FISHING IN THE MONDEGO RIVER
The Mondego River, in addition to being a place to admire, also offers a wide range of leisure and sports opportunities, such as sailing, canoeing, rowing, or… fishing. We are not talking about the traditional sardine fishing, our favorite fish at the fish market, but rather sport fishing with a line, with the river mouth being one of the best spots to set up your rod, cast your hook and watch the trawlers go by. On good days, dozens of fishermen line up on the jetties on both sides of the river. There are many species that can be caught here, both freshwater and marine, thanks to the mixture of river waters with those of the Atlantic Ocean. Sea bass, sea bream, sea bream, sole and plaice, eel, are just some of the river fishing specialties in Figueira da Foz. It is worth noting that surfcasting or casting fishing are also very popular on our coast.

EXPLORE THE TIDEPOTS
Whether during a serene morning or a breathtaking Figueira da Foz afternoon, low tides in the Cabo Mondego area offer a beautiful experience of contact with coastal biodiversity. We are talking about the tide pools, ponds and small lagoons that form when the sea recedes in the many rock formations that populate the beaches from Cabo Mondego to Buarcos.

Check the tide table, be careful of slippery rocks and try to discover the small life that abounds in these natural “aquariums”, where we can find a huge diversity of corals, molluscs, algae, fish, starfish, crustaceans and other small creatures that are trapped there. And make the most of the ‘BioDiversity4All’ platform or the ‘iNaturalist’ app to recognize the species.
A DAY AT SEA BODYBOARDING
Bodyboarding in Figueira da Foz, especially at Cabedelo beach, is a vibrant and challenging experience. Known as one of the best and most consistent waves in Portugal, Cabedelo is a historic spot that has hosted world competitions since the 1990s. It is a true paradise for bodyboarding enthusiasts, where the culture of big waves and the heritage of surfing have endured over time. Buarcos and Quiaios/Murtinheira are other points of reference for the sport, for those who prefer to stay on the north bank of the Mondego.

PLAY FOOTBALL ON THE BEACH
In the months with better weather, the extensive sandy beach of Figueira da Foz is perfect for great football matches with friends, with the particularity that the games can be played on the sand or on one of the three synthetic pitches built for this purpose, along the seafront that connects Figueira to the town of Buarcos.

A MORNING OR LATE AFTERNOON OF STREET BASKET
Figueira da Foz is a land with a great basketball tradition. It has produced great champions and athletes who have reached the NBA, such as Ticha Penicheiro, and Ginásio Club Figueirense and Sporting Clube Figueirense continue to be national exponents of the sport. It is therefore no surprise that there are so many public basketball courts in the municipality, most of which are in good condition and inviting for a few hoops. Luckily for you, we have saved you the trouble of searching and have made a map with all the playing courts:

PLAY A MATCH OF PADEL
Padel is no longer a fashionable sport and has become a permanent part of the activities of those who enjoy a good challenge. Its practice involves physical exercise, healthy competition and social interaction. Figueira da Foz offers a wide range of courts, including the Tennis Club da Figueira da Foz, the Padel Club and the Arena Fitness Club, both in Tavarede, and the Hotel Rural Quinta d’Anta, in Mallorca, which has padel courts open to the public.

DOING ARBORISM: AN ADVENTURE FROM TREE TO TREE
At the Figueira da Foz Adventure Park, the main attraction is tree climbing, which involves completing high-altitude courses in the trees with various challenges: crossing nets, slides of over 100 metres, bridges made of planks and nets, net and wooden tunnels, spider webs, etc. Special conditions for groups of over 10 people. This tree climbing park is located next to the Figueirense Gymnasium pavilion, in an area with picnic tables. An initial training/briefing is held and, from there, participants complete the courses in the established order, with the support and supervision of the monitors.

SHOPPING IN A STORE WITH HISTORY
Figueira da Foz is “equipped” with an unusual number of large commercial areas, but it also continues to have many traditional establishments, small shops and local family businesses that survive and innovate, offering excellent services and products, mostly locally. Therefore, in the cause of sustainable and responsible tourism, and the appreciation of this human and architectural heritage, we challenge you to choose these stores when you are in the city and need to do some shopping. In the municipality of Figueira da Foz there are almost 30, in addition to the establishments that, due to their historical, cultural and social interest, are part of the national platform “Commerce with History”, of the Directorate-General for Economic Activities.
Grocery stores, restaurants, bars, barber shops, jewellery shops, you will find a bit of everything on this local shopping route, where the service is in fact more genuine and personalised. Almost all the establishments in the Comércio com História chain are located in the city of Figueira da Foz, on central streets such as Rua da República (in the photo), but some, such as the Alambique bar (Maiorca) or the Peleiro restaurant (Paião), are located in other areas of the municipality. The best thing to do is to use the map that MeetFigueira has prepared (clique aqui) and go discover…

EXPLORE 5 DE OUTUBRO STREET IN BUARCOS
Rua 5 de Outubro stands out as a unique and distinctive heritage site, thanks to its location and setting, acting as a beautiful balcony over the sands and sea of Buarcos, while also exuding history, located above the Buarcos Fortress and its walls, serving as one of the best spots to enjoy the sunset. In fact, walking along the street itself is an almost therapeutic experience given the picturesque beauty of the scenery. It is also very well supported by several restaurants, ice cream parlours and cafés, which invite you to take a longer and more delicious break.

TASTE THE SUN… BOTTLED
Tasting the “Sol Engarrafado” fortified wine from Figueira da Foz is a unique opportunity to taste a drink with a fascinating history and unforgettable flavor. Originally distributed from 1950 onwards by the owner of a wine warehouse, this fortified wine has recently been reborn, standing out as a great ambassador for the region. By visiting the Sol Engarrafado Store in Bairro Novo, connoisseurs can try this exclusive fortified wine.

CROSSING BY BOAT TO CABEDELO
The ferry-boat trip to Cabedelo is an unmissable experience for anyone visiting Figueira da Foz. This initiative was born as an alternative solution during the construction of the Edgar Cardoso Bridge, but quickly became one of the major tourist attractions, especially in the warmer months, making the Figueira-Cabedelo and Cabedelo-Figueira journey accessible to anyone, in a practical, quick, beautiful and sustainable way.

The boarding points are located at the Figueira da Foz Recreational Marina, on the north bank, and at the Cabedelo pier, to the south, just 200 meters from the most famous wave sports beach in the region. With timetables that can be consulted here, this crossing combines the natural beauty of the mouth of the Mondego River with the convenience and charm of a boat trip.
TAKE THE ROUTE OF THE FOUNTAINS
The Fountains Route connects the town of Maiorca with the town of Sanfins, passing through its springs and mountains. This route includes notable stages such as Mãe de Agua, Caminho Real, Serra de S. Bento, Serra de Castros, Casal Benzedor and Sanfins de Baixo. Covering around 5,500 metres, the route provides an insight into the importance and impact of springs on the environment, highlighting their crucial role in the advancement of agriculture and the lives of local communities.
TRY THE ALHADAS CAKE
Discover the unique flavor of Bolo das Alhadas, a traditional sweet bread that is a true gastronomic gem of the region. The uniqueness of this cake lies in its history and tradition. The original recipe was created many decades ago by a talented local baker – Leonor das Alhadas, or Leonor dos Bolos – and has been passed down only within her family, from parents to children, for more than half a century. Bolo das Alhadas stands out not only for its flavor, but also for its artisanal production method, which limits the quantity available. It can be found in local bakeries and markets.

PARTICIPATE IN THE TRADITION OF XÁVEGA ART
Immersing yourself in the tradition of the Xávega Fishing Art in Figueira da Foz is an enriching cultural experience. The Educational Beach of the Casa dos Pescadores da Costa de Lavos transforms traditional fishing into a living lesson, introducing visitors of all ages to the knowledge and practices of the sea. This initiative is carried out by fishermen and fishmongers dressed in traditional costume, keeping ancestral traditions alive. The project, which was launched in 2015, aims to raise awareness of the lives linked to the sea, through educational and cultural activities. The xávega art, it should be noted, is still practiced on the beaches of Costa de Lavos and Leirosa, in the south of the municipality.

RIDE THE CYCLE PATHS
Exploring the cycle paths in the municipality of Figueira da Foz is one of the healthiest and most sustainable ways to enjoy the natural and urban beauty of the municipality. With a continuous investment in soft mobility, Figueira da Foz offers several cycle paths that connect key points in the city. The highlight is the Ecovia da Frente de Mar e Praia Figueira/Buarcos, which offers a recreational and sporty route along the extensive sands, providing comfortable and qualified access to the beaches.

Another option is the Cycle path of the Atlantic Front, located along Avenida do Brasil. This route provides privileged access to the sandy beaches of Buarcos and Figueira da Foz, passing by points of interest such as the Buarcos Fortress and Cabo Mondego. Finally, we recommend the Vila Verde cycle route, a beautiful stretch along the riverbank in the last 5 kilometres of right bank of the Mondego, almost always in a straight line and on a flat level, passing by the Ginásio Club Figueirense nautical complex, with a great view over the Morraceira Island..
RELAX IN THE HEATED SEA POOLS
The heated saltwater pools are a new and unique attraction on the beaches of Figueira da Foz, providing moments of comfort and well-being. Located in Buarcos and close to the Clock Tower, these pools dug into the sand, with free entry, stand out for using water heated to 29°C using solar energy, in a sustainable and innovative solution. Measuring 28 meters long, 20 meters wide and with a maximum depth of one meter, they offer ideal conditions for a peaceful and safe dip for the whole family, especially children. Beware of the queues that sometimes build up!

TAKE THE PUBLIC ART ROUTE
Exploring the Public Art Route in Figueira da Foz is an inspiring way to connect with the city’s culture and history. This route invites you on a journey through the streets and public spaces, where a significant number of works of art are on display, each with a unique story to tell.
These works of public art were created to mark important events, pay tribute to illustrious figures, professions or local traditions. As you explore the city, you will have the opportunity to appreciate these artistic elements that not only beautify the urban space, but also enrich the cultural experience, offering a different perspective on the heritage and identity of Figueira da Foz.

VISIT THE MAGENTA GALLERY
Magenta is an Association of Artists for Art that brings together visual artists from Figueira da Foz. In addition to temporary initiatives and exhibitions, the association has a permanent gallery open to the public, located beneath the Esplanada Silva Guimarães, next to the Clock Tower. This gallery exhibits works by its members or the result of courses and workshops they run, as well as by guest painters. It is the ideal space if you also want to understand how Figueira da Foz inspires artists, as it is one of the most frequently depicted themes. Open from Monday to Sunday, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

DISCOVER THE GÂNDARA MILLS
About ten years ago, the Mó-Gândara Association, in an initiative to promote the local rural heritage, restored a plot of land for agriculture in Cunhas, in the parish of Moinhos da Gândara, revealing the existence of two historic watermills. This discovery prompted a comprehensive project to restore and enhance the value of these mills, including the conversion of their ruins and mills. The project expanded to include a windmill, a threshing floor and a traditional oven, enriching the cultural and historical experience of the place. This effort culminated in the creation of the Molinological Complex, a living museum of approximately eight thousand square meters, acquired by the Municipality of Figueira da Foz in 2018.

Various initiatives are also carried out here to preserve and promote rural experiences in the picturesque Gândaras region, which encompasses the north of the municipality of Figueira da Foz and the municipalities of Mira and Cantanhede.
RELAX AND TAKE A WALK IN THE LAGOA DAS QUERIDAS
Another excuse to pack your lunch and explore Figueira da Foz beyond the city and beaches, and to explore the landscape of Gandara. The interior of the municipality has more and more attractions that deserve to be better known and visited. Lagoa das Queridas is one of the symbols of the parish of Ferreira-a-Nova, north of the Mondego. The lagoon is artificial, but has existed for decades, providing a beautiful body of water, full of life and a very pleasant surrounding area, which in recent years has benefited from major investment, with landscaping and access to sanitary facilities, picnic areas and leisure facilities, including for children.

FIGUEIRA DA FOZ BEACHES: A PARADISE WITH GOLDEN DISTINCTION
Figueira da Foz stands out in central Portugal for its extensive sandy coastline, encompassing 13 extraordinary beaches, of which 11 boast the Blue Flag and 9 have been honoured with the prestigious Gold classification by the Quercus Environmental Association. The municipality is a veritable mosaic of beaches, catering to all tastes: from quiet spots for those who love to relax, to more vibrant spots for water sports enthusiasts. Heres some of the best:
QUIAIOS BEACH
Located in the heart of the Quiaios Dunes National Forest, Quiaios Beach offers stunning views, a vast stretch of sand and a more peaceful atmosphere than the urban beaches of Figueira. With a recent investment in walkways parallel to the sea, which stretch for 3,400 metres in front of the village, it provides an invigorating and inspiring walking experience. The beach is well served by restaurants and beach bars, such as the Beach Club N2, and offers a range of activities such as surfing, bodyboarding and a children’s playground, not to mention the excellent public swimming pool by the sea, with a diving board.

MURTINHEIRA BEACH
For those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and who value simplicity, Praia da Murtinheira in Figueira da Foz is a perfect choice. Despite having two magnificent beach bars, Sand and Bart, ideal for relaxing outdoors, this beach maintains a character of tranquility and natural beauty. Many locals consider it a secret hideaway, with its clear waters, golden sands, and wild dunes beneath the majestic Serra da Boa Viagem. The waves at Murtinheira, like those at Quiaios, are ideal for surfers. The recently improved access with walkways also makes it an ideal spot for hiking and exploring the trails of the nearby mountain range.

MONDEGO CAPE BEACH
Cabo Mondego Beach in Figueira da Foz is an almost idyllic destination during low tide. Its rocks teeming with marine life create a picturesque setting, with tide pools full of biodiversity that transform into small aquatic oases, ideal for both children and those who want to relax in the calm waters. Accessible by excellent road links and with ample parking, this beach is also connected by bike paths. Local highlights include the Tucano beach bar, as well as other establishments nearby, especially in Parque da Emide, such as Bulls Burger, Farggi or the delicious Croissanteria da Praia, each with its own unique charm. The beach, however, should be avoided during high tide due to its limited sand and the presence of rocky areas. In addition, it is a good place for surfing, bodyboarding and sport fishing, following the tradition of other beaches in the region.

TAMARGUEIRA BEACH
In Figueira da Foz, Tamargueira Beach stands out as one of the city’s most popular beaches. Located close to the urban centre of Buarcos, this beach offers a range of amenities, including a Lidl supermarket and a wider range of restaurants, cafés and bars nearby. With a sandy area dominated by the stylish Spasso Praia bar, Tamargueira is known for its rocky features, making it ideal for visiting at low tide, where you can explore tidal pools and natural lagoons. It offers magnificent views of Buarcos Bay, the city and the mountains to the north, making it perfect for families and water sports enthusiasts. The beach is also renowned for its accessibility, boasting the “Accessible Beach for All” Flag in 2022.

BUARCOS BEACH
Buarcos Beach is one of the oldest and most vibrant destinations on the Portuguese coast, and is also one of the most popular and frequented beaches in the region. Renowned for the quality of its sand and sea, Buarcos Beach is also famous for its abundance of leisure and sports facilities, including football pitches, volleyball, beach rugby and basketball. With a variety of beach bars, such as the renowned Pé na Areia and the iconic Din’s Bar, cafés, traditional shops, and excellent Atlantic cuisine, Buarcos offers a complete experience. The spacious sands, the rocky tideline rich in marine life and the accessible facilities, including lifeguard services and an amphibious chair for people with reduced mobility, make Buarcos an inclusive and welcoming beach.

CLARITY / CLOCKTOWER BEACH
The iconic Praia da Claridade, in Figueira da Foz, is made up of the Alto do Viso, Relógio and Molhe Norte beaches, boasting one of the largest stretches of urban sand in Europe. The venue for the famous RFM Somnii techno music festival, this beach is located opposite Bairro Novo, the city’s shopping centre, and is marked by the iconic “Nivea ball”. Access to the sea is facilitated by walkways, leading to a vast stretch of sand, perfect for enjoying the space without disturbances. With clear, fine sand, good waves (requiring caution with currents), and no rocks, the beach also offers a variety of leisure and sports facilities, such as basketball and football pitches. The highlight in terms of beach bars is the Jet 7.5 Food&Drinks at Oásis, with its large terrace and excellent cuisine. A cycle/pedestrian path crosses the beach, providing one of the best sunset walks in the region.

COVA GALA / CABEDELO BEACH
On the left bank of the Mondego River lies the picturesque and ancient coastal community of Cova-Gala, part of the town and parish seat of São Pedro. Its sheltered beach, divided by jetties, is a peaceful retreat ideal for families, offering leisure and sports facilities such as a basketball court, playground and skateboarding, as well as nearby bars and restaurants. Close to the famous Praia do Cabedelo, this area is full of clubs and schools for surfing, bodyboarding and other water sports. A few metres away, the leafy Cova-Gala Picnic Park offers spaces for leisure and picnics, complementing the experience in the region.

COSTA DE LAVOS BEACH
Costa de Lavos Beach, located on the southern bank, is distinguished by its extensive stretch of clean sand and views that reach the Serra da Boa Viagem. Eight kilometres long and crossed by a jetty to the south, this beach is ideal for surfing and bodyboarding, thanks to its strong waves, and has a kitesurfing club. It has toilet facilities and a selection of cafés and restaurants in the village. The Xiringuito bar stands out, adding a touch of sophistication. The beach is also known for its traditional artisanal Xávega fishing, similar to that practiced in Leirosa, further south. With a motorhome park, the beach is surrounded by the extensive Costa de Lavos National Forest.

TIPS ABOUT FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
HOW TO GET TO FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
To get to Figueira da Foz without your own vehicle, you can use the bus, Rede Expressos or with Flixbus, which offer direct connections from Lisbon and Porto, also having fast routes from Coimbra.
The train is an equally viable alternative, although the connections are not as direct as by bus. However, the most practical and quickest way to get to Figueira da Foz is by car. The journey takes approximately two hours from Lisbon, an hour and a half from Porto or just over 30 minutes from Coimbra.
SMOOTH MOBILITY
With a network of cycle paths and eco-paths that is constantly expanding, especially in the coastal and urban areas, Figueira da Foz is also increasingly becoming an excellent destination for cyclists and long-distance hikers. The municipality is part of the Eurovelo 1 – Atlantic Coast Route, particularly in sections 22 and 23. Those coming from the south will have to detour a little inland, in Montemor-o-Velho (Verride) to cross the Mondego River, although there are plans to build a cycle bridge between Alqueidão and Vila Verde, which will significantly reduce the distance. Coming from the north, you can already enjoy the new tarred road that crosses the national forests and dunes between Praia de Mira and Quiaios.
THE TRANSPORT NETWORK IN FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
This is one of the weak points of the city and municipality, although it has improved considerably in recent times, especially with the opening of river passenger transport and the two new Circular Minibus Lines, one urban and the other on the south bank, in the parish of São Pedro. The lack of cars can somewhat limit those who wish to extend their visit to the municipality. However, within the city, most places of interest can be reached on foot or using the network of shared bicycles and scooters, which the municipality makes available to users.
Taxis can be a good alternative for longer journeys, and here we recommend Taxi Morgado (tel: 966144983 or 966076860). It is also common to find Uber vehicles, so this option should also be considered.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Figueira da Foz, known for its natural and cultural beauty, is also a city that stands out for the safety and tranquility it offers its residents and visitors. The city, with its privileged location on the Portuguese coast, has a low crime rate, which contributes to a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, whether for daytime strolls along its beaches and tourist attractions or to enjoy the vibrant nightlife. A new video surveillance system was recently installed in Bairro Novo, the city’s nightlife area par excellence. This security is a feature appreciated by both locals and tourists, who find Figueira da Foz a safe haven to relax and enjoy everything the city has to offer.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
It always depends on the purpose of your visit, but the busiest time of year in Figueira da Foz is undoubtedly summer. The municipality is very popular at this time of year due to the large and varied range of beaches and bathing facilities, as mentioned here. In August, the city fills up with tourists and events, so if you are looking for quieter times, our advice is to visit Figueira da Foz between April and June and between September and October, when temperatures are mild and the city can feel the vibrancy of longer days.
IN CONCLUSION
Figueira da Foz is a true treasure to discover, going far beyond its beaches and famous casino. With an incredible diversity of places to visit, activities to enjoy and delicacies to taste, this municipality offers a rich and captivating tourist experience for all who visit it. Whether exploring the lush nature of the Serra da Boa Viagem, immersing yourself in the culture and history of the various museums and monuments, or tasting the local gastronomic delights, Figueira da Foz promises to delight and surprise those who visit it, and not just the beach experience. A trip to the municipality is a journey full of possibilities, remarkable experiences and unforgettable moments.
