August is already in its final stretch, but there’s still time for refreshing proposals. So let’s talk about swimming pools in Figueira da Foz that are open to the public. We’ve already seen that Figueira da Foz has some of the best ocean beaches in the central region, remember the article here, but there’s also no shortage of fantastic places for “freshwater sailors”, we’re talking, of course, about the publicly accessible swimming pools scattered throughout the municipality.

Most are municipal or run by parish councils, others are private but with open access, but all offer excellent conditions for those who want to escape the heat but don’t like the sea, sand or salt water. Here, for the remainder of this bathing year and for future reference, are Figueira da Foz’s outdoor swimming pools:

And 2023 has even been a busy year for still water lovers, whether with the new heated pools on the Buarcos and Torre do Relógio beaches, or with heavy investment in the rehabilitation and modernization of outdoor pools in the interior of the municipality, an example of which is the installation this week of hydraulic elevators for people with walking difficulties in all of them, for more inclusive use.

Figueira da Foz has a wide range of public swimming pools on offer, although they are sometimes unknown to the people of Figueira da Foz, whom we also urge to get to know the charms and amenities of the 14 parishes better, because there is life beyond the coast 🙂

This is a list of outdoor swimming pools that are open to the general public, for leisure and use mainly in the summer, of course, but the municipality also has the indoor swimming pool of the Gymnasium Clube FigueirenseThe recently refurbished 25-meter tank next to the Municipal Stadium, as well as the Paião Municipal Swimming Poolwhich is also covered and closes in August.

But for “relaxation” in still waters, this is our choice:

Saltwater pools on the beach

Figueira da Foz’s new bathing “craze”, two large artificial pools in the middle of the sandy beaches of Buarcos and Torre do Relógio (or Praia da Claridade). With heated salt water, they were inaugurated in August this year and have proved to be a tremendous success, especially among the youngest. Free to enter, they can accommodate 70 people at the same time and, during the bathing season, they are open every day from 9.30am to 1pm and from 2.30pm to 7.30pm, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes, and entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Quiaios Beach Swimming Pool

Next to the beach and with a privileged view of the sea, this small pool complex offers two ponds, one for children and another 25 meters long with a diving board, as well as a bar and sun loungers with sun hats, providing an excellent alternative to the rough sea of Quiaios and the wind-swept beaches. Open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the pools are run by the Quiaios Parish Council, with the following prices: General – € 3.00 ; Children up to 12 years old – € 2.00 ; Seniors (> Over 65) – € 2.00.

Figueira da Foz Municipal Camping Pool

One of the nicest and coolest outdoor pools in the county, surrounded by grass and in a green area with plenty of shade. With support bar. In 2023, it is only open to the general public on weekdays (Monday to Friday) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the rest of the time and weekends reserved for Park users. Prices: Adults: €4; Children from 6 to 13 – €1.50; From 14 to 17 – €2.

Alhadas Municipal Swimming Pool

In addition to the excellent indoor pool, which is closed until mid-September, Alhadas also offers an outdoor pool in the summer, with a lawn area, open from Monday to Saturday from 14:30 to 19:00. Prices: €2.50 (from 6 years old inclusive); €1.25 (4 and 5 years old).

Mallorca Municipal Swimming Pool

Extensively refurbished this year, Mallorca’s municipal swimming pool is another excellent option for cooling off in the interior of the municipality. Having reinforced the pool and renovated the furniture and equipment, including awnings for shade, this pool, with its bar, shades and sun loungers, is ready to provide refreshing swims for all ages and conditions, and is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the following prices: up to 3 years old is free; from 4 to 12 years old – €1.50; from 13 years old – €2.

Marinha das Ondas swimming pool

To the south of the municipality there are several freshwater options and one of the liveliest is undoubtedly Marinha das Ondas, open every day except Sunday from 14:30 to 19:00. With grassy areas and some shade provided by a few trees, it is also a regular venue for parties and get-togethers and has a bar. Accessible to people with reduced mobility. Free for children up to 6 years old, from 7 years old admission is €2.50.

Alqueidão Swimming Pool

Another solution on the right bank of the Mondego, open from 12.30pm to 7.30pm (closed only on Mondays). A smaller space with little shade, but with lawns, parasols and sun loungers, unobstructed views and a bar service. Accessible to people with reduced mobility. Prices: up to 4 years old is free; from 4 to 6 years old – 1.50€; from 6 years old – 2.50€.

Ferreira-a-Nova Municipal Swimming Pool

To the north of the Mondego, we find the Ferreira-a-Nova swimming pool. Open every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with lawns, parasols and sun loungers, as well as a café-bar. Prices 2023: full day – 3€; ½ day – 2€; Frequent user card: 7€ = 7 entries.

Moinhos da Gândara Municipal Swimming Pool

Open every day of the week between 12 noon and 8pm, it has a bar, parasols and sun loungers. Prices: Free for children up to 6 years old; 7 to 12 years old – 1,50€; From 12 years old – 2,50€. This pool closes its summer season on September 3, to which everyone is invited, and as for dives, there will be more next year!

Casa Pinha swimming pool

The only private pool on this list is undoubtedly the best located, at least in terms of scenery, as it sits on the southern slopes of the Serra da Boa Viagem, offering a magnificent panoramic view over the city and the bay of Buarcos. Part of a tourist resort, Casa Pinha, with a bar and terrace service, the pool is open to the public every day of the week, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (the terrace bar opens at 1 p.m.), and admission costs €6.

Splendor on the lawn of Figueira da Foz’s Abbey Park

It’s true that today’s pitches no longer allow for the soccer matches that used to fill the Abbeys at the weekend in the 80s, and that the younger generations get more pleasure from playing FIFA on the console. However, the huge expanse of lawn, which crosses much of the heart of Figueira da Foz, from the Municipal Garden to the area of the Dr. Joaquim de Carvalho Secondary School, allows for a multitude of activities and hobbies, limited only by the scope of one’s imagination.
