World War II. Maria hastily marries Hermann Braun, a German soldier. Missing in action, Maria refuses to believe he is dead. His story of the struggle for survival is set against the backdrop of the war years and the economic miracle that followed.
Hanna Schygulla was awarded the Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlin Film Festival. It is one of Fassbinder’s masterpieces that includes several cinematic metaphors on the question of identity and the experiences of post-war Germany.
