One Thousand and One Nights: In Search of Figueira da Foz’s Women of Letters

“One Thousand and One Nights” is part of the Atos program, an initiative of the D. Maria II National Theatre, in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, constituting above all an appeal for the participation of the communities where it passes. This time there is an appeal to the population to make known women who wrote in Figueira da Foz.
It is an artistic project developed by the association Um Coletivo, which seeks to “rescue from oblivion the work of Portuguese women who wrote in the 20th century, professionally and amateurishly”.
To this end, we are looking for women from the municipality of Figueira da Foz who have written diaries, letters, aerograms, telegrams, postcards to their husbands, family members or as war madrinhas during the colonial war; women who have written short stories or unpublished stories; women who know lengalenga, prayers or songs linked to the seafaring professions; women who run or have run a local bookshop.
This project is part of the “National Odyssey”, of the D. Maria II National Theatre, an initiative that, in 2023, will pass through all regions of Portugal, with hundreds of proposals grouped into five major programs: Plays (shows), Acts (participation projects), Fruits (activities for school audiences), Scenarios (thought events), Nexuses (training), and also an Exhibition.
